Delhi Commission for Women Appeals to President for Urgent Action on Manipur Violence
National Desk, 2nd August: Following their visit to Manipur, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has taken swift action to address the ongoing violence in the state. The commission’s chief, Swati Maliwal, has written to President Droupadi Murmu, appealing for immediate interim recommendations.
In their appeal, the DCW urgently calls for the imposition of President’s Rule in the violence-torn state and the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
Additionally, the commission has requested the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate and determine the root cause of the ethnic clashes causing unrest in Manipur.
Among the interim recommendations, the DCW has further urged the Prime Minister and a team of Union Ministers to visit the state, aiming to de-escalate the situation and find a resolution to the ongoing violence.
Notably, Swati Maliwal, along with her team, recently visited Manipur on July 23, where they interacted with survivors in various relief camps and assessed the ground situation.
During their visit, the DCW chairperson met with Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, apprising her of the ground situation and the conditions of people residing in relief camps across the state. She sought the Governor’s intervention and appropriate action against the perpetrators involved in the heinous incident where a woman was paraded naked by a mob.
As part of their fact-finding mission, Maliwal and her team visited several relief camps in both hills and valley areas of Manipur. They actively engaged with the affected communities, inquiring about their grievances and concerns.
The appeal to the President underscores the urgency of the situation and emphasizes the need for swift and decisive measures to restore peace and safety in Manipur.
