Delhi: Sonia Gandhi Admitted To Hospital

Guwahati: Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi was hospitalised to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in the nation’s capital on Wednesday for treatment of a viral respiratory infection, said hospital authorities.

Dr Ajay Swaroop, chairman (Board of Management), Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said, “Sonia Gandhi, chairperson, UPA was admitted to our hospital today.”

Dr. Swaroop added that she was treated by Dr. Arup Basu and his staff while being hospitalised to the Department of Chest Medicine.

“Sonia Gandhi has been admitted for observation and treatment of a viral respiratory infection,” Dr Swaroop added.

Reports claim that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the general secretary of the Congress in charge of the BJP-ruled state of Uttar Pradesh, was unable to join her brother and party MP Rahul Gandhi on his current “Bharat Jodo Yatra” due to her mother’s declining health.

Priyanka and Rahul both travelled back to Delhi on Wednesday from UP, where the yatra is now taking place.

On Thursday morning, Rahul returned to the yatra from Mavikala in the UP district of Baghpat.

On Tuesday afternoon, the yatra began its leg through Uttar Pradesh (UP) from the Marghat Hanuman temple in Delhi, where Rahul was seen praying.

The yatra will return to Haryana on January 6 after travelling through UP in three days. The yatra travelled to UP via Loni from Delhi.

National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah and Shiv Sena (Uddhav) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi joined the yatra on Tuesday.

They praised the march and claimed that despite attempts by the Centre to damage Rahul’s reputation, he persisted in his yatra unfazed and undaunted.

Rahul is expected to travel with Priyanka the entire UP part of the yatra.

“I’m proud of my brother. The government came up with ploys to scuttle the yatra and spent thousands of crores to tarnish his (Rahul’s) image. Even central agencies were sent after him. But he did not stop,” Priyanka said on Tuesday, adding that she was also proud of every citizen who joined the yatra.
