Devotees throng Kamakhya temple to witness annual Ambubachi Mela

Guwahati, 24 June: Thousands of devotees flocked to the historic Kamakhya temple in Guwahati as the annual Ambubachi Mela got underway.

The largest religious celebration in the Hindu faith is the Ambubachi mela which takes place at the Kamakhya temple on the Nilachal hill. The entire temple has been decked up for the most religious feast has been decorated throughout the entire temple.

The main door of the temple was shut for three days and three nights after Pravritti was conducted for the Ambubachi Mela this year at 2:30 a.m. on June 23. The Nivritti for the Ambubachi Mela will take place on June 26. After Nivritti, all ceremonies and pujas will be carried out.

Every year, the Ambubachi Mela is held in the Kamakhya Temple and it is thought that at this time, the Goddess Maa Kamakhya has her yearly menstrual cycle.

There are three days when Mother Earth is said to become unclean and during those three days, no farming is done. Guwahati has undertaken strict security precautions for the largest religious celebrations.
