Diganta Borah: No Such Term as ‘Encounter’ in Police Language

Guwahati: The Guwahati Commissioner of Police Diganta Borah stated on Friday that there is no such thing as a “encounter” in the vocabulary of the police and that occasionally the police must take certain actions within the bounds of the law in reference to the recent open firing at two suspected thieves.

Borah said, “There is no such term as encounter in police language and whatever is needed to arrest the culprits are done. Sometimes we have to take certain extreme steps within the limit of law.”

He claimed that the two thieves, known as Gaurav Paul and Mukesh Kumar, were involved in a number of robberies, including the theft of gold chains, cell phones, and other items.

Numerous stolen items were recovered on each of the robbers by the police.

Borah said, “Thieves never say they stole and families do not want to believe what their children have done.”

He continued by saying that numerous illegal actions, including the theft of chains and cell phones, had been reported in the city during the past few days.

Several places throughout the city were the target of police raids, and numerous people were arrested for questioning.

Borah said, “One thief tried to escape while other tried to escape with our pistol.”

“Police had to shoot in self-defence. The two thieves have been arrested on the basis of a case registered in November,” he said.

When the robbers were apprehended during the raid, the firing incident took place.

The two thieves were shot by the police after they opened fire on them earlier today in the vicinity of Geetanagar.

The thieves were arrested by Geetanagar police and were shot at while they tried to escape police custody.

They were rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after the incident.

Interacting with the media, injured Mukesh Kumar said, “Few days back one of my family members bought a new phone. We inserted one SIM that was registered with my name. Later, the police asked us to reach police station and questioned us regarding the phone. Then I don’t what happened and the police shot us. I didn’t try to escape, was just sitting at one place.”

GMCH official informed that the injured are being treated at the hospital and will be released as soon as they recover.

Meanwhile, Gaurav’s mother said that the police had entered their home at 12:30 a.m. and taken away her cellphone and gold jewellery. They stole various items from their broken almirah as well as breaking it.

The mother said, “Gaurav is a drug addict however, he was never arrested by the police earlier.”
