Displaced Residents in Guwahati Demand Fair Compensation in Sit-In Protest
Guwahati, 11th September: Displaced residents of the Silsako area in Guwahati have initiated a sit-in protest, emphasizing their urgent need for proper housing. Their fervent demands resound as they call on the government to take decisive action to address their situation.
Tensions are escalating as protesters express their discontent with the government’s announcement of compensation for only 10 households, totaling Rs 5.10 lakh. They deem this amount wholly insufficient and are fervently urging authorities to promptly reconsider their decision and ensure equitable compensation for all those who have been evicted.
This protest underscores the critical need for a comprehensive resolution to the displacement issue and amplifies the residents’ call for justice.
Earlier, on September 5, the Kamrup Metro District Disaster Management Authority Chairman and District Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha had announced an allocation of Rs 75 lakh as one-time assistance in the first phase from the funds of the Kamrup Metropolitan District Disaster Management Authority for households affected by eviction in Silsako.
In the first phase of assistance, each of the five RCC houses evicted in Silsako will receive Rs 10 lakh, while the five Assam model houses will receive Rs 5 lakh, according to a press release.
