Doctors Across Arunachal Pradesh Protest for Justice in Kolkata Doctor’s Murder Case
Northeast Desk, August 17, 2024 — Healthcare services in Arunachal Pradesh were significantly disrupted on Saturday as doctors participated in a nationwide protest demanding justice for a postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
At Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences in Naharlagun, doctors held a demonstration in front of the Emergency and Trauma Department, displaying placards and chanting slogans to voice their demands for justice for the victim and her family.
An anonymous doctor reported that all routine services at the hospital were halted. Similarly, the Ramakrishna Mission Hospital in Itanagar suspended outpatient department services and elective surgeries for 24 hours, starting from 6 AM. Essential services at the hospital continued uninterrupted, according to RKM Secretary Swami Vedasarananda.
Protests were also observed at Aalo General Hospital in West Siang district and Bakin Pertin General Hospital in Pasighat, where doctors called for enhanced security measures for healthcare professionals. The Aalo doctors specifically urged the government to implement 24×7 security for both government and private healthcare workers.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Arunachal Pradesh branch, which organized the protest, has demanded the immediate arrest and swift trial of those responsible for the crime, as well as the formulation of a central law to safeguard doctors and healthcare personnel.
The protests reflect a growing concern for the safety of medical professionals and a collective call for stronger protective measures in the wake of this tragic incident.
