Firing reported at Assam-Arunachal border over road construction
Guwahati: Officials stated on Thursday that tensions arise over road building on a disputed section of the Assam-Arunachal border at Gogamukh in Dhemaji district after residents objected to the road being built by the Arunachal state government, leading to contractor firing in the air.
According to reports, the incident took place on Wednesday evening in the Hime Basti area of Assam’s Gogamukh police station.
“The development of the road by the Arunachal administration was hampered by Assamese locals. When they arrived at the building site to protest, the contractor involved shot one bullet into the air “, reports claimed.
Angry with the response, Assamese residents physically halted work, damaged a few cars, and set fire to the road construction gang’s temporary camp, according to the official.
“As soon as the Assam Police Department was notified, a team of officers went to the spot. We now have complete control over the area, ensuring that no adverse incidents occur “the police official said.
The state government of Arunachal Pradesh has yet to respond to the occurrence.
The violence over the border road comes only two days after Assam and Arunachal Pradesh agreed at a chief ministerial-level meeting on Monday to conduct a ground-level survey on the status of the inter-state boundary in order to resolve the knotty border conflict.
It may be mentioned that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a meeting with his Arunachal Pradesh counterpart Pema Khandu to discuss the border issue on 24 January 2022.
