National desk, 7 July: A commotion broke out in the Tripura Legislative Assembly on July 7 after five opposition MLAs were expelled from the present budget session. The MLAs were suspended by the Speaker, Biswabandhu Sen for allegedly disrupting and undermining the order of the house during the session.
Sudip Roy Barman of the Congress party, Birshaketu Debbarma, Ranjit Debbarma, Nandita Reang of Tipra Motha as well as Nayan Sarkar of CPIM are among the suspended MLAs. Their suspension was implemented following a number of protests and disruptions caused by the opposition parties.
The controversy started when BJP MLA Jadab Lal Nath’s alleged involvement in watching pornographic videos during the previous assembly session was brought up by opposition leader Animesh Debbarma in his motion for an adjournment. However, the speaker declined to answer their questions and continued with the Finance Minister’s presentation of the budget.
In response, the opposition leaders voiced their displeasure by entering the house’s well and calling for harsh action against MLA Nath. When three Tipra Motha MLAs ascended a table inside the residence to express their displeasure, the protest grew more intense.
Chief minister Manik Saha recommended the suspension of the five opposition MLAs and backed the speaker’s decision to maintain decorum in the chamber. The opposition parties left the room in protest at the speaker’s decision to suspend the MLAs from the current session at the chief minister’s request.
