Five others & Brother of Mizoram CM Have been Given 1yr Prison Sentences for Fraud

Guwahati: A special court convicted six people on February 8, among them the brother of Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga who had been found responsible for the fabrication of compensation receipts for land needed for a hydroelectric power plant on February 7 to one year in prison.

The special court in Aizawl which upheld the Prevention of Corruption Act, also imposed a Rs 20 lakh fine on each of them and committed them to the central jail.

C Vanlalchhuana, Zoramthanga’s younger brother, Saiaithanga, C Rokhumi, Lalduhawma, PC Lalthazovi and KLalrawna round out the six.

Each of the six offenders received a one-year prison sentence and a fine of Rs. 10 lakh under Sections 420, 120B, 467, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code.

They were found guilty of obtaining remuneration in a plot including manufacturing land passes for the village council, falsifying land passes and misleading the police.

The judges claimed that Northeast Electric Power Corporation Ltd.’s 60MW Tuirial hydropower project resulted in thousands of dollars in compensation for the acquisition of submerged property.
