Former Tripura insurgents threaten stir

Guwahati: A group of surrendered militants known as the Deprived Returnees Movement Committee (DRMC) threatened to escalate protests unless the authorities kept their promises made at the time of their surrender on Monday.

The surrendered militants would stage a blockade on the Assam-Agartala national highway on June 5 as part of the demonstrations.

They want to create an indefinite blockade to demand that their demands be met immediately.

While addressing a press conference on Monday, the forum’s general secretary Amrit Reang said that they had put down their arms and joined the mainstream many years ago, but that the promises made during the surrender ceremony have yet to be honoured in letter and spirit.

“We visited with senior government officials on multiple occasions to argue for our demands. We have sent a memorandum with all of our demands as well as a description of the issues we are facing. “However, nothing has been done from their end thus far,” he stated.

He further said that they held a meeting with the tribal welfare department and other officials in October, but it was in vain.

PMAY dwellings for returnee families, subsidised Power tiller, a sustainable Piggery and Gottery plan, and the withdrawal of all ongoing cases are the primary five demands that will be underlined during the protests.
