GMCH Supt. Abhijit Sarma: 4 Depts Treating Nilmani Phookan

Guwahati: The renowned poet of Assam Nilmani Phookan is receiving care at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital(GMCH) from at least four different departments. Superintendent Abhijit Sarma informed this on Thursday.

He said that Phookan’s health is condition is slightly better than yesterday when he was admitted at the hospital however he is still in critical condition.

He is being treated by the cardiology, neurology, anaesthesia and medicine departments.

Phookan was sent from Sanjeevani Hospital to GMCH for early treatment on Wednesday night.

Sarma claimed that because the septic shock infection has gone throughout his entire body, he is still at risk.

Sarma said that he has been infected with septic shock and it has spread all over his body due to which he is not out of risk.

Antibiotics were prescribed after a diagnosis of the infection.

No one is now permitted to meet him because he is currently in Non-invasive ventilation (NIV).

Everyone is advised not to approach the patient while he is receiving treatment since he may become more infected.

He is admitted to the General ICU on the 5th floor of GMCH.

At a ceremony held at Rabindra Bhawan in Guwahati earlier in April of last year, renowned Assamese poet Nilmani Phookan was presented with the highest literary honour, the “Jnanpith Award.”

He was given the Jnanpith Award in December 2021, making him the third Assamese figure to do so.

The acclaimed poet received the honour from Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam. Notably, Assam hosted the awards ceremony for the first time.

The author received the honour in recognition of his lifelong contributions to writing. Before him, the honour had been received by Mamoni Raisom Goswami and Birendra Kumar Bhattacharyya.

Taking to Twitter, CM Sarma had shared a moment from the event. He wrote, “Sharing a memorable moment from this evening’s Jnanpith Award, 2021 distribution ceremony where Kabya Rishi Nilmani Phookan recites a few thought-provoking lines from one of his creations.”

Kobita, Gulapi Jamur Lagna, and Surya Henu Nami Ahe Ei Nodiyedi are a few of Nilmani Phookan’s well-known works.

His collection of poetry, Kavita, won the 1981 Sahitya Akademi Award in Assamese. In 1990, the Indian government gave him the Padma Shri award. In 2002, the Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters bestowed upon him the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, the nation’s highest literary accolade.
