Govt spends Rs 6.5 lakh crore annually on agriculture and farmers’ development: PM Modi

National desk, 1 July: The BJP-led central government is spending Rs 6.5 lakh crore every year on the welfare of farmers and agriculture, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He made the announcement while inaugurating the 17th Indian Cooperative Congress at the International Exhibition and Convention Centre (IECC) in Delhi on Saturday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also present on the occasion. Prime Minister Modi said that the UPA government had spent Rs 90,000 crore on agriculture sector in five years before 2014. But the BJP has spent three times more on the ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi Yojana’ than that. He also claimed that cooperatives have also been given facilities and platforms like the corporate sector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said that farmers are not only being promised but also working for them. The BJP government is promoting Digital India which has led to direct benefits to the beneficiaries.

BJP government is also aiming to eliminate dependence on cash transactions. The Prime Minister also claimed that India’s dominance in digital transactions has been able to occupy a special place in the world. Prime Minister Modi also said that digital transactions need to be included in the cooperative sector as well.

According to the Prime Minister, ethanol worth Rs 70,000 crore was purchased from sugar mills in nine years. Stressing on the need to reduce the import of edible oils and pulses, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said cooperatives can play an important role in making the country self-reliant.

Prime Minister also said that there is a demand for Indian production in the world from milk powder to butter or ghee. He mentioned that a new market has also been set up for bajra in India. He also hoped that the Government’s Shri Anna Yojana could be a great source of income for the small farmers of the country. He also said that the demand for a separate fisheries ministry has been raised for a long time and that demand has been fulfilled by the Government.
