Healthcare Services Disrupted in Nagaland Amid Nationwide Strike Over Kolkata Doctor’s Death

Northeast Desk, August 17, 2024 — Healthcare services across Nagaland faced major disruptions on Saturday as medical professionals participated in a statewide strike to protest the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The strike, held from 6 am to 6 pm, was organized by the Indian Medical Association Nagaland State Branch (IMANSB), the Nagaland In-Service Doctors’ Association (NIDA), and the Indian Dental Association Nagaland State Branch (IDANSB).

During the strike, all non-emergency services were suspended to demonstrate solidarity with the nationwide strike initiated by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). IMANSB honorary secretary Dr. Aonungdok Tushi Ao highlighted the need for stronger protection for healthcare workers, echoing sentiments shared across the country.

The Naga Hospital Authority Kohima confirmed that while outpatient departments (OPDs) were closed for the day, emergency services continued to operate. The IDANSB emphasized the critical need for a safer working environment and voiced strong support for justice and protection efforts.

In a gesture of solidarity, NIDA members wore black bands and badges to honor the memory of the victim. The incident, involving the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar MCH, has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice from the medical community.
