HITO Raises Objections to Meghalaya-Karnataka MoU on Poultry and Piggery
Meghalaya’s Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has voiced strong opposition to the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Meghalaya government and the Karnataka Cooperative Society on poultry and piggery development, set to be signed on January 23.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on January 19, HITO expressed concerns over the agreement, citing a lack of transparency, absence of public consultation, and inadequate consideration of long-term implications for the state’s citizens. The organisation called for a reconsideration of the MoU, urging the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with the public and their representatives before proceeding.
HITO outlined three key concerns:
First, the organisation highlighted the absence of public consultation in the decision-making process, which they argued undermines democratic principles and the citizens’ right to participate in decisions affecting their livelihoods and resources.
Second, they criticised the lack of legislative debate on the agreement, stressing the need for scrutiny and consensus in the Legislative Assembly to ensure accountability and fairness.
Finally, the group pointed to a lack of transparency surrounding the MoU, raising questions about the government’s priorities and intentions. They demanded assurances that the welfare of Meghalaya’s people would not be compromised for external interests.
HITO warned of potential public protests if their concerns were ignored, stating they would “take to the streets to ensure that the democratic rights of the people are upheld.”
The letter concluded with an appeal for the government to demonstrate “wisdom and foresight” by addressing public apprehensions and fostering trust through open dialogue. As the proposed agreement approaches its signing date, the issue is expected to remain a focal point of public and political discourse in Meghalaya.
