National Desk, 5th August: Indian Railways has suspended all train services to Bangladesh, including the Kolkata-Dhaka-Kolkata Maitri Express, from July 19 to August 6. The cancellations come in the wake of escalating political turmoil and violent protests in Bangladesh.

The complete list of cancelled trains includes:

  • 13109/13110 (Kolkata-Dhaka-Kolkata Maitri Express): Cancelled from 19.07.2024 to 06.08.2024
  • 13107/13108 (Kolkata-Dhaka-KOAA Maitri Express): Cancelled from 19.07.2024 to 06.08.2024

  • 13131/13132 (Dhaka-New Jalpaiguri-Dhaka Mitali Express): Cancelled from 19.07.2024 to 06.08.2024

This decision follows a dramatic announcement by Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and left the country for a “safer location.” Addressing the nation, General Zaman assured that the military would help form an interim government to stabilize the situation.

The unrest, which has resulted in over 300 deaths, reached a climax when thousands of protesters stormed Hasina’s official residence, Ganabhaban, in Dhaka. Reports indicate that both Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, have fled to a “safe shelter” amid the chaos.
