Guwahati: Retired Guwahati High Court Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan on December 28 visited to the Mukroh village in Meghalaya where six people perished in a shooting.
Phukan is in charge of the investigation into the Mukroh shooting incident and a month prior, she had travelled to Dongkamukam in West Karbi Anglong to look into the shooting.
Along with visiting local groups, she also met members of the police and the forest department.
Along with the meeting, Phukan attended a public hearing at the Inspection Bungalow in Donakaukam, but it was unsuccessful because it was purportedly called with little advance warning.
According to reports, the Karbi Students Association (KSU) urged the commission to hold a second public hearing so that those who were present when the incident occurred might eventually speak.
Notably, representatives from a number of organisations asked for the public hearing to be extended, and as a result, the next hearing date was set for January 9.
The Assam government established a one-man inquiry commission on November 23 under the leadership of Phukan. The commission set December 27 as the date for a public hearing at which anyone with information about the facts or circumstances was invited to appear and provide a statement to the commission at the Dongkamukam Irrigation Guest House in West Karbi Anglong.
”Notice is hereby given to all persons/organizations having knowledge of the facts and circumstances relating to the above incident to appear and submit the statement at the date/time/venue mentioned below, which should be accompanied by an affidavit in support of the facts stated therein by them together with the list of documents if any, on which they propose to reply and the originals or true copies of such documents in their possession or control and state the name (s) and address (es) from whom the remaining documents may be obtained”, the public notice dated December 27 issued by the one man committee read.
