Karnataka Assembly Polls: Election Voting Begins Today

National, 10 May: After intense campaigns, Karnataka’s election contests are now over because voters will decide the candidates’ fates on Wednesday. Statewide voting started at 7 am and will last until 6 pm.

All three of Karnataka’s major political parties—the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) have made electoral appeals by promising to win a majority in the 224-seat assembly. The required number of seats is 113 in order to form a majority government.

According to reports, Varuna, Kanakapura, Shiggaon, Hubli-Darwad, Channapatna, Shikaripura, Chittapur, Ramanagara and Chikmagalur are some of the key seats that would have a significant impact on today’s elections.

Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had exuded confidence that BJP would return to power with a full majority in the state. Shah was quoted by ANI saying, “We will win the elections by full majority or at least half a mark plus 15 seats. In these four years, Yediyurappa and Bommai’s government has done a lot of work.”

The counting of votes will take place on May 13.
