Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to Inaugurate New Assam Legislative Assembly Building
Guwahati, July 30th: The anticipation grows as Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla prepares to dedicate the brand new Assam Legislative Assembly building on Sunday.
Since Dispur became the capital in 1972, the Assembly has been operating out of a converted tea warehouse. However, with the completion of the new complex, a new era in the state’s legislative activities begins.
The inaugural event will witness the esteemed presence of Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Rameshwar Teli, along with several other dignitaries.
Spanning an impressive 10 acres of land, the state-of-the-art complex comprises the main building, housing the House, and annexes catering to administrative needs.
The construction journey faced challenges and incorporated additional components, ultimately leading to a revised cost estimate of Rs 351 crore, an increase from the initial Rs 234.84 crore.
One of the hallmarks of the new Assembly is its modern and sustainable approach. The complex will function as a paperless Assembly, embracing technology for more efficient and eco-friendly proceedings.
Excitement builds for the upcoming House session scheduled for September, which will be the first to be conducted in the new building. With a seating capacity of 180, the Assembly is well-equipped to accommodate the current strength of 129 MLAs, ensuring a smooth and conducive legislative environment.
The new Assam Legislative Assembly building stands as a symbol of progress and a commitment to fostering a vibrant democracy in the state. Its inauguration marks a significant milestone in the history of Assam’s legislative affairs, ushering in an era of modernity, accessibility, and efficiency for the state’s lawmakers and citizens alike.
