Sports Desk, 12th May: The forthcoming 2024-25 domestic cricket season in India is on the verge of significant transformations, with proposals aimed at revamping the structure and scheduling of matches. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is leading the charge for these reforms, pending approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Apex Council, with the goal of revolutionizing player performance management and streamlining the competitive framework.
A key aspect of the proposed changes is the extension of intervals between matches, intended to provide players with ample time for recovery and reduce the risks of fatigue-induced injuries. Central to the revamped calendar is the division of the esteemed Ranji Trophy into two phases, departing from the traditional format.
The proposed itinerary begins with the revered Duleep Trophy, followed by the Irani Cup, leading into the inaugural phase of the Ranji Trophy featuring the initial five league encounters per team. Following this phase, the cricketing spectacle transitions into the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (50-over), culminating with the conclusion of the Ranji Trophy, including the remaining two league fixtures and the knockout rounds.
In an effort to promote parity and foster balanced competition, the CK Nayadu Trophy, a premier under-23 state tournament, will introduce a novel point system aimed at equitable outcomes. A post-season evaluation will assess the feasibility of integrating these modifications into the overarching framework of the Ranji Trophy.
Furthermore, radical adjustments are proposed for CK Nayadu Trophy fixtures, including the elimination of the traditional toss and granting visiting teams the option to choose their preferred course of action, whether batting or bowling. Additionally, the revamp extends to Women’s Interzonal tournaments, with national selectors responsible for assembling teams to elevate the standard of competition.
These transformative initiatives, informed by a distinguished working group comprising luminaries such as Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Ajit Agarkar, and Abey Kuruvilla, signify a concerted effort to enhance the caliber of domestic cricket and provide players with an optimal competitive environment. Pending endorsement by the BCCI Apex Council, these recommendations have the potential to redefine the landscape of Indian domestic cricket, ushering in an era of heightened competition and enhanced player welfare.
