Man Arrested For Attending Child Marriage In Assam

Guwahati: In an unprecedented state-wide action against families involved in child marriages, Assam Police on Friday arrested a man from Bongaigaon for allegedly attending the marriage of his nephew who tied the knot with a minor girl

The person has been identified as 40-year-old Zahir Ali Mondal, a resident of Supariguri No 2 in the Bongaigaon district of Assam.

The individual was taken to the Gerukabari patrol police station following his detention.

Mondal had gone to the wedding of Rafiq Ali Mondal in Jamdaha No. 1 who married a 15-year-old girl five months ago.

Meanwhile, 4135 cases have been registered in connection with incidents involving child marriage in Assam, and 2763 people have been arrested thus far.

Hojai district has seen the most arrests, totaling 216, while Nagaon has had the second-highest number of arrests, totaling 184 in the instance of child marriage.

However, Dhubri is third where 183 people have been arrested as part of the Assam government’s campaign against child marriage.

Dhubri leads the way in terms of cases with 383 total cases reported to the police station and Nagaon comes in second with 255 total cases reported.

Next is Kokrajhar, where 209 charges have been filed against those who have married children.
