Maring Students’ Union Stands Firm Against Indian Armed Forces’ Actions, Calls for Non-Cooperation Movement
Northeast Desk, 23th June: The Maring Students’ Union has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the non-cooperation movement spearheaded by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), denouncing any collaboration with the Indian Armed Forces. In a recent statement, the Union, representing the Maring Naga Tribe, expressed grave concerns over the actions of the Assam Rifles in the Rilram Maring Area of Tengnoupal and Moreh Sub-division.
Criticizing the Assam Rifles’ stringent roadside checks and perceived failure to effectively secure borders, the Union condemned what it described as frequent harassment of local residents. Despite the commuters being known local residents, the Assam Rifles allegedly demand identification and occasionally detain individuals, actions the Union decries as unjustified harassment. Moreover, the Union called for an end to the intimidation of village leaders and the dissemination of false reports, particularly targeting the Rilram Area Maring Organisation (RAMO).
In addition to local concerns, the Union extended sympathy to Myanmar nationals who sought refuge following the 2021 military coup. Approximately 1,428 refugees have settled in six Maring Naga villages, outnumbering local residents and presenting significant challenges related to security and community dynamics.
Highlighting the impact of militarization in the Maring area, the Union condemned the aggressive conduct of the Indian Armed Forces. The Assam Rifles’ disruptions at Sita have severely affected business commuters, impeding their livelihoods and economic stability. This disruption, the Union asserted, undermines fundamental rights and contributes to stress and uncertainty among residents.
Drawing attention to historical grievances, the Union paid tribute to victims of past violence, including incidents like Operation Bluebird in 1987, the murder of Eli Rose from Ngaprum village, and the Oting tragedy in December 2021. The recent extension of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA-1958) has exacerbated tensions, fostering an environment of impunity and contributing to alleged human rights violations.
In response, the Maring Students’ Union called for the repeal of AFSPA and urged the Indian government to conduct transparent investigations into reported abuses in the Naga homeland. The Union appealed to the international community to support their pursuit of peace, justice, and human dignity, emphasizing the need for accountability and a peaceful resolution to the ongoing issues in the region.
