Massive Haflong Rally Denounces Manipur’s Barbaric Attack on Tribal Women
Guwahati, 25th July: A huge protest against the horrific attack on tribal women in Manipur on May 4 took place on Tuesday at Haflong in Dima Hasao, Assam.
The Dima Hasao Joint Women’s Organization sponsored the rally, which included representatives from many local villages. Before assembling in front of the DC office, protesters marched through the main thoroughfares from Lalfield to Synod Rotary and Council Rotary.
A letter was sent to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the demonstration, and copies were also provided to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the DC.
The horrifying incident in which two tribal women were publicly paraded naked, gang-raped, and violently attacked by a mob was condemned by the demonstrators with astonishment, grief, and rage. Tragically, one victim’s teenage brother also perished while attempting to defend his sister.
The rally made women’s existential anguish over the ongoing violence in Manipur and the country more visible. According to the group, such incidents frequently go unreported, and even when they are, authorities infrequently take adequate action against the offenders.
The Dima Hasao Joint Women’s Organization condemned the heinous act and urged that the federal and state governments, the national commissioner for women, and the national commission for scheduled tribes take swift legal action against those responsible.
They demanded the most severe punishment possible in order to avoid such brutal and terrible atrocities against women in the future. The protesters sought justice for the victims and their families, as well as an end to such heinous crimes in society.
