Northeast Desk, 5th September: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma are gearing up to resume the second phase of talks on the long-standing inter-state border dispute, expected to take place in October 2024.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Sangma revealed that he had casually discussed the next round of negotiations with Sarma over dinner nearly a month ago. “We have both agreed that we should be able to hold the next meeting by October,” Sangma stated.
The first part of the second phase of discussions was held on May 23, 2023, addressing six key areas of dispute between the two states, including Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Deshdoomreah, Block-I & Block-II, and Khanduli-Psiar.
Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong previously confirmed that the Meghalaya government has been inspecting the disputed areas as they prepare for the upcoming talks. He also noted that Sangma would soon convene a meeting with Sarma to finalize the plan of action for the next round of discussions, aiming to resolve the decades-old boundary issues between the two northeastern states.
