Meghalaya Cabinet Initiates Reforms in Education Sector – Forms MERB and Approves NCERT Textbook Adaptation
Northeast Desk, 16th November: In a proactive move to address longstanding vacancies and enhance educational standards, the Meghalaya cabinet has taken pivotal decisions. It has decided to establish the Meghalaya Education Recruitment Board (MERB) to expedite the filling of 187 vacancies in Secondary & Higher Secondary and Higher and Technical Education levels, left unaddressed for 3 to 4 years.
The MERB is mandated to streamline the recruitment process, aiming to complete it within 3 to 6 months, encompassing all education-related matters.
Additionally, the cabinet granted approval for the adaptation of NCERT textbooks, with necessary modifications, by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE). This adaptation, beginning in the next academic year, will extend from Class I to X. It includes changes in language for schools teaching in local/vernacular languages (Class I to V). Phase 1 of this transformative process aligns with national standards, addressing concerns about the quality of MBOSE textbooks in subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English.
The initiative strives to elevate overall textbook quality, learning outcomes, and content, leading to a reduction in the number of textbooks. The adapted curriculum aims for a harmonious blend of national standards with locally relevant content rooted in Meghalaya’s culture and history.
