Meghalaya Chief Minister Inspects Umjasai Catchment Area Amid Water Crisis

Northeast Desk, 4th May: Amidst a severe water crisis gripping Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma undertook an inspection of the Umjasai catchment area in Shillong. The visit aimed to assess the measures in place to safeguard and restore water sources in the face of the ongoing drought-like conditions.

With the state grappling with a prolonged dry spell, the inspection underscored the urgency of addressing the water scarcity issue. Concurrently, in a bid to mitigate the pervasive water shortage affecting Tura Municipality and promote judicious water usage, the District Magistrate of West Garo Hills, Tura, issued a directive under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

As per the directive, all car wash services within the Tura Municipality are now limited to Mondays and Thursdays, with a prohibition on bore well usage. Residents are urged to embrace water conservation practices, both at home and within their communities, particularly during periods of scarcity. Additionally, individuals are advised against car washing activities to ease the strain on water reserves.

These measures reflect the government’s proactive stance in addressing the pressing water crisis and fostering sustainable water management practices across the state.
