Meghalaya: Congress and NPP Gear Up for Gambegre Bypolls Amid High Stakes
Northeast Desk, August 3, 2024 — With the Gambegre Assembly seat bypolls approaching, political activity in Meghalaya is intensifying. While the National People’s Party (NPP) has yet to announce its candidate, the Congress party is making strategic moves to retain control of the seat.
Speaking to reporters, Vincent H Pala, the president of Meghalaya Congress, emphasized the party’s commitment to victory. “Leaders like Saleng A Sangma and Deborah C Marak are gearing up to ensure our success in the upcoming elections,” Pala stated.
On the other side, Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Rakkam A Sangma expressed confidence in the NPP’s chances. Despite a significant loss in the recent Lok Sabha elections, he asserted that the NPP would secure a substantial number of votes in the bypolls.
Previously, Congress’ Saleng Sangma had achieved a notable victory over NPP’s Agatha Sangma in the Tura constituency, adding to the competitive nature of the upcoming election.
Insiders suggest that the NPP has concluded its selection process, with sources indicating that Mehtab Chandee, wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, has emerged as the likely nominee.
While the Congress has not yet finalized its candidate, all parties are gearing up to launch robust campaigns in the Gambegre constituency.
