Meghalaya: Curfew Imposed in Mawkynrew Village After Vandalism at Ramakrishna Mission School

Shillong: District authorities in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills imposed an immediate curfew in Mawkynrew Village on Monday following acts of vandalism and destruction at the Ramakrishna Mission School. The move comes amid rising tensions and concerns over public safety in the region.

District Magistrate Rosetta Mary Kurbah, IAS, issued the emergency order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Samhita (BNSS), citing a potential threat to peace and stability. The curfew applies to areas under the jurisdiction of Madanrting Police Station.

“These activities are likely to continue, with every likelihood of causing a serious breach of peace and tranquility, potentially leading to loss of life and property,” the official order stated.

The curfew, enforced immediately, will remain in effect until further notice. Local police and security personnel have been deployed to maintain order and prevent any further escalation.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the extent of the damage to the Ramakrishna Mission School or confirmed if there were any injuries during the incident. The school, a prominent educational institution in the area, holds significant importance to the local community.

The imposition of the curfew highlights growing concerns about the law and order situation in East Khasi Hills, with officials urging residents to cooperate with authorities and maintain calm during this period of heightened tension.
