Meghalaya: Fake Army Captain Caught in Shillong, Suspected of Espionage Activities

Northeast Desk, 25th July: A man impersonating an Indian Army captain was apprehended in Shillong, sparking concerns about possible espionage. The suspect, identified as Sar Chehon Rongpi from Assam’s Karbi Anglong District, was found loitering around military installations while dressed in an army uniform.

The incident unfolded when army officials at a canteen in Headquarters 101 Area grew suspicious after Rongpi failed to present valid identification. His cover story quickly fell apart under questioning, as he provided inconsistent information about his unit affiliation.

A search of Rongpi’s mobile phone revealed a cache of sensitive military data, including photographs and videos of convoys, weaponry, and restricted areas. This raised fears that Rongpi may have been involved in intelligence-gathering operations.

An official’s First Information Report highlighted Rongpi’s repeated infiltration of the HQ 101 Area through various entry points, each time posing as a captain from the Assam Regimental Centre.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger confirmed that Rongpi was transferred to the Jhalupara police outpost on the night of July 23 for further investigation. Authorities are now working to understand how the impersonator accessed multiple secure locations and to evaluate the potential impact on national security.
