Meghalaya: Garo-Language Film “Rapture” Wins Best Cinematography at Malaysian International Film Festival

Northeast Desk, 31st July: Dominic Sangma’s Garo-language film, “Rapture,” has won the Best Cinematography award at the 7th Malaysian International Film Festival (MIFF). The award was presented to the film’s cinematographer, Toxo Xavier, whose exceptional work has garnered international recognition for this film from Meghalaya.

“Rapture” is set within the Garo community in Meghalaya, Northeast India, and tells the story of a ten-year-old boy suffering from night blindness. The boy lives in a village plagued by fear due to the mysterious disappearance of locals and rumors of human organ trafficking.

The film’s gripping narrative and breathtaking visuals have captivated audiences globally, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Garo community. Supported by Hubert Bals, Visions Sud Est, and the Doha Film Institute, “Rapture” is produced by Dominic Sangma’s Anna Films, in collaboration with China’s Xu Jianshang and Sun Li, as well as Indian producers Anu Rangachar, Harsh Agarwal, Aditya Grover, and Stephen Zacharias. Meghalaya-based patron Eva Gunme R. Marak also played a key role in the film’s production.

Following its international success, “Rapture” will have its homecoming release in Meghalaya at Tura, Garo Hills, on August 15. This eagerly anticipated event is expected to be met with a warm reception from the local community.

The film’s achievement at MIFF not only underscores the talent within the Garo community but also brings Northeast Indian cinema to the forefront of the global film industry. Its nuanced depiction of local folklore and contemporary issues makes it a significant addition to the current film landscape.
