Meghalaya SSA Non-Teaching Staff Begin Indefinite Sit-In for Salary Hike

Northeast Desk, 31st July: The All Meghalaya SSA Non-Teaching Staffs Association (AMSSANTSA) commenced an indefinite sit-in demonstration on July 31, demanding the state government enhance the salaries of over 1,200 non-teaching staff across SSA schools in Meghalaya.

At the protest venue at Malki Ground, AMSSANTSA finance secretary Ricky Shullai addressed reporters, stating, “We have decided to stage this indefinite sit-in demonstration to demand the state government consider enhancing our salary, plus a two percent increment based on seniority and a five percent annual increment.”

Shullai emphasized that the demonstration is not an outright protest against the state government but rather a demand for their rights. He highlighted that the last salary enhancement occurred in 2016. “Eight years have passed, and despite meeting the education minister and officials for their intervention, there has been no positive response to our demand,” Shullai said.

He reaffirmed the association’s resolve, stating, “We will continue with our agitation until the government fulfills its promises to enhance our salary.” The non-teaching staff involved in the sit-in include those working at cluster, block, district, and state levels under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, State Education Mission Authority of Meghalaya.

The association recalled that Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma, during a 2023 State Assembly session, had informed that the proposal for enhancing SSA non-teaching staff salaries had been sent to the finance department. However, no action has been taken since then. “This clearly shows that he (Rakkam) was only making a false promise to fool the members of the State Assembly. However, the non-teaching staff are prepared to fight for their rights,” the association stated.
