Meghalaya Government Dismisses Rumours of Landfill Site in Mawkhanu

Shillong: The Meghalaya government has dismissed growing rumours about a proposed landfill site at Mawkhanu, assuring the public that no such project is under consideration.

Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, responsible for Urban Affairs, addressed the issue during the ongoing budget session, clarifying the government’s stance.

Dhar stated that a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) was not conducted prior to acquiring government land in Mawkhanu because there are no plans to establish a landfill there. This statement came in response to concerns raised by legislator Brightstarwell Marbaniang.

The Deputy Chief Minister further explained that while Shillong may eventually require 100 to 150 acres for a landfill site, the government is not pursuing such an initiative in Mawkhanu at present. The announcement has alleviated concerns among local residents about potential environmental and health risks linked to a landfill project in the area.
