Meghalaya Government Promotes Strawberry Cultivation through Sapling Distribution

Northeast Desk, 8th December: In a concerted effort to promote strawberry cultivation, Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, the Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare for the Government of Meghalaya, distributed Strawberry Planting Materials to farmers in the Syntung-Nohron Cluster. The minister also visited strawberry plantations in Syntung Village, Mawkynrew Community & Rural Development Block, East Khasi Hills on Friday.

As outlined in a press statement, farmers participating in this initiative will receive additional support in the form of packaging materials and limited market access. The estimated value of the project stands at around Rs 2 crore.

Under the Mission for Integrated Development for Horticulture and Fruit Development Scheme, farmers were provided with Strawberry Planting Materials and Drip Irrigation. The farmers contributed through labor, organic manure, and other inputs. This assistance is expected to significantly benefit the farmers, considering the high profitability associated with strawberry cultivation.

During this planting season, the department aims to distribute approximately 6 lakhs saplings across strawberry clusters in Garo and Khasi Hills, benefiting around 500 farmers. Key officials present during the distribution included the Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, I. Laloo, Director of Horticulture, D. Sohtun, and other senior officials.
