Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan’s Hindi Address In Legislative Assembly
Guwahati: Chaos broke out in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly when Governor Phagu Chauhan delivered his address in Hindi during the maiden budget session of the newly elected Legislature and the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA.02) administration on Monday.
Four members of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) including Legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit stormed out of the meeting.
Even though the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Speaker Thomas Sangma claimed that copies of the speech were given out in Hindi, Legislator Basaiawmoit argued that this was an improper gesture because English is the House’s official language.
The Government was hesitant to recognise the Khasi and Garo languages, he further recalled because the governor was speaking to the house in Hindi.
Minutes later, the four VPP MLAs walked out of the House as the Speaker insisted on the Governor to continue his speech.
