Meghalaya Govt unveils statue of U Tirot Sing Memorial in Dhaka

Northeast Desk, 16th February: The U Tirot Sing Memorial was inaugurated today, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, accompanied by the unveiling of the bust of U Tirot Sing Syiem, the courageous hero of Khasi Hills and a prominent freedom fighter from Meghalaya.

U Tirot Sing Syiem’s bravery in defending his people and land ensures his enduring legacy as one of the most formidable freedom fighters in both the region and the nation.

Alongside U Kiang Nongbah from Jaintia Hills and Pa Togan Sangma from Garo Hills, U Tirot Sing Syiem is among the three most renowned freedom fighters from Meghalaya, each revered for their defiance against British colonial rule.

These figures are lauded for their resistance against British colonial rule. U Kiang Nongbah, notably, led a Jaiñtia uprising against the British and faced public execution on December 30, 1862, at Iawmusiang in Jowai town in West Jaintia Hills district.

The unveiling of U Tirot Sing Syiem’s statue stands as a testament to the enduring respect and remembrance of the sacrifices made by these freedom fighters for their homeland. This event not only honors U Tirot Sing Syiem’s invaluable contribution to the fight for freedom but also symbolizes the rich history and cultural heritage of Meghalaya.
