Meghalaya: KSU Appeals for Ban on Firecrackers in East Khasi Hills Ahead of Diwali
Shillong – On the eve of Diwali celebrations, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) urged East Khasi Hills district authorities to enforce a ban on the sale and use of firecrackers, emphasizing the health and environmental risks associated with their use.
In a letter to Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, KSU Environment Secretary Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew underscored the annual spike in air pollution due to firecrackers, posing a significant threat to public health. “Each year, excessive use of firecrackers during Diwali leads to a substantial rise in air pollution levels, making it challenging for residents, especially those with respiratory issues, to breathe safely,” wrote Kharbihkhiew.
The KSU highlighted particular concerns for vulnerable groups like seniors, children, and people with respiratory ailments, who are disproportionately affected by the festival’s pollution. They also noted the safety hazards posed by fireworks, which can strain emergency services during Diwali celebrations.
While acknowledging the cultural importance of Diwali to Meghalaya’s diverse population, including non-indigenous settlers, the KSU advocated for eco-friendly alternatives such as diyas and lamps. “Many residents and local community groups support eco-friendly options that uphold the spirit of the festival without causing environmental harm,” the letter noted.
The KSU’s appeal reflects growing support for pollution-free celebrations, promoting awareness around environmental preservation and public health safety in Meghalaya.
