Meghalaya Police Register Case Against HYC Leaders for Unlawful Eviction Drive

Northeast Desk, 24th May: Meghalaya Police registered a case against leaders of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) following their involvement in an eviction drive on May 23 targeting alleged illegal settlers in the Lum Survey area. The case, filed at the Sadar Police Station, names HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem, Vice President Donbok Kharlyngdoh, Assistant General Secretary Isaac Basaiawmoit, along with multiple other individuals.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Rituraj Ravi, confirmed that the charges stem from unlawful actions carried out by the HYC leaders and their associates during the eviction drive on Thursday morning. “The case was registered in connection with the unlawful actions carried out by them in Lum Survey in the morning of 23/05/24,” stated SP Ravi.

The police are currently investigating the matter to ascertain the full extent of the involvement and any potential violations of the law during the eviction activities. The situation underscores ongoing tensions regarding land disputes and the actions of local advocacy groups in the region.
