Meghalaya Registers First Case Under New Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Law

Northeast Desk, 2nd July: The newly-implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita law saw its inaugural case registered in Nongpoh, Meghalaya, on July 1st. The case, filed under Section 303(2), pertains to the theft of a two-wheeler reported at the Nongpoh police station.

According to reports from local media, the complaint was lodged by an individual from Lailad area in Ri Bhoi district, detailing the theft incident.

Earlier efforts to educate the public about India’s three new criminal laws included an awareness program organized by the Department of Law at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong. Held on June 29th at Dorbar Hall in Mawkynroh, Umshing, the event attracted participation from over 30 community members.

During the program, faculty members Dr. A.K. Singh, Dr. R. Sil, and Dr. Shishir Tiwari outlined the key provisions of the new laws. Daiaman Langstang provided Khasi language interpretation to ensure effective communication with the local audience, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the legal changes introduced.
