Meghalaya: UDP and PDF extend support, bringing NPP coalition’s strength to 45

Guwahati: With the backing of both the United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People’s Democratic Front (PDF), the National People’s Party (NPP) coalition in Meghalaya has consolidated its control in a significant political development.

With two MLAs apiece, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) already supported the NPP, which was headed by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. The NPP coalition currently enjoys a significant majority in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly thanks to the cooperation of the UDP and PDF.

The NPP has received backing from both the UDP, which has 11 MLAs, and the PDF, which has two MLAs. With this, the NPP coalition’s strength in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has climbed to 45.

The UDP announced its decision to support the NPP, citing the need for stability and development in the state. The party said in a statement, “We have decided to support the NPP-led government for the overall development of the state and for the benefit of the people.”

Meanwhile, the PDF, which had earlier supported the Congress, has also extended its support to the NPP. The party has now joined the coalition that controls Meghalaya as a result of this move.
