Mizoram Assembly Likely to Pass Resolution Opposing UCC

Guwahati: The Mizoram Assembly is anticipated to vote against the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Home Minister Lalchamliana will introduce a formal resolution against the UCC during the upcoming budget session, which starts on Tuesday, an official said.

The country’s proposal to introduce UCC was rejected last week by the Mizo National Front (MNF), which is now in power. They declared that the appropriate steps would be taken in order to approve a resolution rejecting the UCC during the budget session.

A few days ago, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju told the upper chamber that no decision had been made about the UCC’s implementation throughout the nation as of yet.

The Union Law Minister responded in writing to a written question from K. Vanlalvena, a Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram, stating that the government had asked the 21st Law Commission to examine a number of UCC-related concerns.

Rijiju had stated that the topic might be taken up by the 22nd Law Commission since the 21st Law Commission’s mandate expired in 2018.
