Mizoram Assembly Pays Tribute to Late Gorkha Leader Kapoor Chand Thakuri
Northeast Desk, 20th August: The Mizoram Legislative Assembly on Tuesday paid heartfelt tribute to Kapoor Chand Thakuri, the first and only nominated legislative member from the Gorkha community in the state. Thakuri, aged 83, passed away in Kathmandu, Nepal, on July 15 due to hypertension.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma led the assembly in honoring the late leader, emphasizing Thakuri’s significant role in Mizoram’s political history. “The Mizoram government and the state assembly deeply mourn the loss of Thakuri, whose dedicated service to the state and its people will always be remembered,” said Lalduhoma.
Opposition leader Lalchhandama Ralte and Public Works Department Minister Vanlalhlana also extended their condolences, reflecting on Thakuri’s legacy and the enduring contributions of the Gorkha community to Mizoram. The assembly observed a minute of silence to honor the departed leader.
Thakuri, who initially began his career as a teacher before venturing into business, was nominated to the first Mizoram Legislative Assembly in 1972. He represented the linguistic minority Gorkha community and remains the only member of his community to have served in the state assembly. After retiring, Thakuri moved to Nepal, where he resided until his passing.
The tribute marked the commencement of the two-day monsoon session of the Mizoram Assembly. During the session, officials confirmed that the assembly would address 273 starred questions, 17 unstarred questions, one new bill, four amendment bills, and one official resolution.
