Mizoram Police Rescue Three Mizo Women Stranded in Syria
Northeast Desk, 26th August: In a successful rescue operation, the Mizoram Police have brought back three Mizo women who had been stranded in Syria for nearly 20 months. The women, who had left Mizoram in 2022, encountered significant hardships after arriving in Syria in November that year. They had been sent illegally by a private placement agency to work as housemaids.
Following extensive efforts by Mizoram police and Indian Embassy officials, the women departed Syria on August 20. They arrived back in India on Saturday, with two women hailing from Hnahthial district and one from Champhai district.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K Sapdanga were deeply involved in the rescue efforts, which began in May. The state government, in coordination with the Indian embassy and Syrian authorities, pursued legal action to secure their release. The women were sheltered by the Indian embassy in Damascus for three weeks while exit visas were processed.
The women were flown to New Delhi on August 20 before returning to Aizawl on Saturday. Plans are underway to send them back to their respective villages later this week to reunite with their families.
