Mizoram successfully concludes bird census, Documentation of 200 Bird Species Achieved

Northeast Desk, 12th February: Conservation Mizoram, in collaboration with the Sailam Ecological Conservation Society, achieved a milestone by conducting the Mizoram Bird Census, Chapchar Awllen Sava Chhiarpui 2024 (CASC2024), for the fourth consecutive year. The closing ceremony, attended by over 50 individuals, was held at the Sailam Bird Sanctuary in Mizoram.

Sailam MLA Baryl Vanneihsangi graced the event as the chief guest. The census documented approximately 200 bird species across Mizoram and also launched an awareness campaign about biodiversity conservation.

Bird counting took place from early morning till noon, with several notable species identified, including the Spot-breasted Laughingthrush, Grey Peacock Pheasant, Mount Victoria Babax, Chin Hills Wren Babbler, Green Cochoa, Himalayan Shrike Babbler, and Oriental Darter.

Apart from the Sailam Bird Sanctuary, censuses were conducted at Mount Phawngpui, Mount Chalrang Hill, the Kolasib district wetlands, Lawngtlai, and Pawlrang. Sailam Bird Sanctuary, previously recording over 270 bird species, faces threats from rapid urbanization and population growth.

Efforts to safeguard Mizoram’s unique biodiversity are ongoing. Situated just 76 kilometers from Aizawl, Sailam serves as a significant hub for various bird species, attracting ornithologists. Additionally, the group participated in the United Nations Environment Programme and the International Conference on Animal Sciences, furthering their conservation endeavors.
