Mizoram to Revive Historic Music Legacy with Leitlangpui Music Festival in Lunglei
LUNGLEI, Nov 11 – Mizoram is set to celebrate its rich musical heritage with the upcoming Leitlangpui Music Festival, scheduled from November 14 to 16 in Lunglei. Tourism Minister Lalrinpuii announced the festival, which will revive the essence of the iconic Serkawn Concert of 1932—a milestone event that brought together communities in communal singing and cultural expression.
At a press briefing, Lalrinpuii emphasized the festival’s historical significance, explaining that the original concert, organized by HW Carter, was a transformative cultural event for Mizoram. “The Serkawn Concert was regarded as the biggest literary movement in Mizoram’s history, drawing audiences from across the region,” she said.
The three-day festival will feature a museum dedicated to Lunglei’s musical roots, live performances by top artists from Mizoram, and a range of family-friendly activities including a play area, traditional food stalls, and an Artist Village with camping facilities.
One of the festival’s main attractions is Mizoram’s largest beat competition, offering a prize pool of Rs 1.5 lakh. Bands from across the state, chosen through district-level auditions, will showcase their talent in this thrilling contest.
Organized by Bbyanimals and Brighter Co with oversight from Lunglei’s Deputy Commissioner, the festival has received Rs 40 lakh in funding from sources including the Ministry of Tourism and the North Eastern Council (NEC). An additional Rs 20 lakh is being requested from the state government to further support the festival’s ambitious goals.
The Leitlangpui Music Festival promises to honor Mizoram’s musical legacy, offering both a cultural spectacle and a unique opportunity for community connection in the heart of Lunglei.
