MLA Jignesh Remanded to 5 Days Police Custody
Guwahati: A local court in Assam’s Barpeta district remanded Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani to five days police custody on Tuesday in connection with a case filed for allegedly assaulting a policewoman.
His bail application was also denied by the court.
Mevani was re-arrested by Barpeta police on Monday for assaulting officials, only days after being released on bail in another instance.
A Kokrajhar court had granted Mevani bail in the matter involving a tweet directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Bhavna Kakoty, the First Class Judicial Magistrate in Kokrajhar, had granted him bail with certain conditions.
Mevani was returned to the Kokrajhar Jail after the hearing. His attorneys stated that they were working on the procedures for the bail bond.
It may be mentioned that he was charged with criminal conspiracy, encouraging hostility between communities, intentional insult with the goal to create a breach of peace, and sections of the Information Technology Act, according to police in Kokrajhar.
