Mystery Deepens in Raja Raghuvanshi Murder: Sonam Yet to Be Interrogated, Families Demand CBI Probe

Shillong: The investigation into the death of Indore resident Raja Raghuvanshi, whose body was found in a gorge in Meghalaya’s Wei Sawdong area, continues to unfold with conflicting claims, emotional appeals, and jurisdictional complexities. His wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi—now at the center of the case—has not yet been interrogated by the Uttar Pradesh Police, even after being found disoriented at a dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road.

Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order, Uttar Pradesh, Amitabh Yash, confirmed on June 9 that Sonam will be handed over to the Meghalaya Police once their team reaches Ghazipur, as the case falls under their jurisdiction. “Sonam Raghuvanshi had called her family around 3 AM, saying she was at Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. Her family informed the Indore Police, who then alerted the UP Police. Ghazipur Police took her for a medical check-up and then to the One Stop Centre. She has not been questioned by us,” said the ADG.

Sonam and Raja had been on their honeymoon in Meghalaya when both went missing. On June 2, Raja’s body was recovered under suspicious circumstances, triggering a massive probe spanning multiple states. With Sonam now in custody and three alleged assailants from Madhya Pradesh arrested in connection with the crime, attention is focused on whether she was complicit—or caught in something far more complex.

Despite Meghalaya Police officials confirming Sonam’s surrender, Raja’s family remains cautious. His brother, Vipul Raghuvanshi, stated, “Until she confesses, we won’t call her an accused. But if she is guilty, she must face the law.” Simultaneously, Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, has strongly defended his daughter’s innocence, accusing the Meghalaya Police and state authorities of “formulating lies” and creating a narrative that targets her without proper evidence.

The case has triggered demands for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry from both families. They cite a lack of transparency and poor communication from Meghalaya officials as reasons for their growing distrust. Devi Singh went further, accusing the police of manipulating the narrative to mislead the public and criminalize his daughter unfairly.

Amidst the emotional fallout, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma confirmed that three suspects from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested. The state’s Director General of Police also verified the arrests and identified Sonam as the woman who surrendered in connection to the case.

As Meghalaya Police prepares to take custody of Sonam Raghuvanshi, the unanswered questions remain as haunting as the misty hills where this tragedy began. With public pressure intensifying and social media fueling speculation, the truth behind Raja Raghuvanshi’s death—and Sonam’s role in it—still waits to be uncovered.
