Nagaland Declares School Holiday for Mass Social Work
The Nagaland government has announced the closure of classes from Pre-Primary to Class 8 on October 25, 2024, to facilitate a state-wide Mass Social Work initiative. All government and private schools have been notified of the closure. However, students from Classes 9 to 12, along with teachers and staff, are required to participate in community service activities around their respective schools.
This directive forms part of broader efforts to engage students in meaningful social responsibility initiatives. The participation of older students is intended to foster a sense of civic duty while contributing to their local environments.
In a related issue, the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) had recently condemned the unauthorized use of classrooms at the Government Middle School (GMS), Midland, by the Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) Department. The DNSU expressed frustration over the department’s continued use of the school premises as a dispensary, despite an earlier vacation notice issued by the Education Department on July 5, 2024.
DNSU leaders Hinoto P. Aomi and Kevin Gonmei argued that while healthcare is crucial, running a dispensary within a school not only disrupts academic activities but also poses a risk to student safety. They called for the immediate relocation of the dispensary to ensure an uninterrupted learning environment for students at the school.
