Nagaland: Dimapur Joint Consultative Meeting Addresses Business Community Concerns

Northeast Desk, 28th April: In response to the indefinite shutdown called by the Kohima Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and Dimapur-based Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Tribal Hohos, Unions, and Associations came together for a Joint Consultative meeting on April 27 at the Naga Council Dimapur office.

The meeting, attended by various stakeholders, aimed to address critical issues raised by the business community amidst the ongoing shutdown. Stemming from a one-day shutdown on April 26, in solidarity with DCCI’s call for action, the Joint Consultative meeting discussed common challenges affecting the region.

Several resolutions were passed during the meeting, reflecting the collective stance and concerns of the participating organizations:

  • Strong support was extended for the ongoing indefinite shutter down in Dimapur District, with the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) reaffirming its commitment to participate in the negotiation process.
  • A timeline of 2 days was suggested for the DCCI and the State Government to resolve the issue, with potential further actions by the NCD and other organizations if not addressed.
  • A 45-day notice was given to the Home Department and District Administration for the verification and scrutiny of existing unions, associations, and welfare organizations.
  • Illegal taxation or extortion activities by Naga Political Groups (NPGs) were condemned until the impasse is resolved.
  • The NCD’s earlier memorandum to the Government of India regarding the Naga Political imbroglio was reiterated, identifying it as a root cause of disruptions in the business sector.
  • The empowerment of the Dimapur Public Grievances Committee under the Vigilance Committee of NCD was reaffirmed.
  • Gratitude was expressed to the Government of Nagaland for taking the issue seriously and implementing measures to curb illegal activities, with offenders to be booked under the National Security Act (NSA), and additional forces deployed to check illegal collections in Dimapur.

The meeting emphasized collaboration between CSOs, the Government of Nagaland, and the Government of India to address the concerns of the business community and ensure the restoration of normalcy in Dimapur District.
