Nagaland Launches “Sports for Votes” Campaign to Boost Voter Registration Among Youth
Mon— The Election Department of Nagaland, in collaboration with the District Administration and the Nagaland Sports Association, inaugurated the “Sports for Votes” campaign, a two-day State SSR SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) Programme for 2024-2025. The event kicked off at Local Ground in Mon, aiming to promote voter registration and awareness among the youth through engaging sports activities.
Christine, the President of the Nagaland Sports Association, emphasized the importance of civic engagement during the opening ceremony. She stated that the “Sports for Votes” initiative offers a distinctive platform for young individuals to actively participate in both sports and the electoral process. “This event provides an opportunity for our youth to be active participants in both the electoral process and community sports,” Christine remarked, highlighting the dual benefits of the campaign.
The event featured Vice President Mike Mirucki and Coach Patrick Brixner, along with Assistant Coach Longshi Jami. Brixner motivated newly registered voters with an inspiring talk about the importance of taking electoral responsibility seriously, and he led a brief warm-up session, energizing the participants and fostering a spirited atmosphere.
On the inaugural day, the initiative successfully registered 27 new voters, indicating a positive reception from the community. The campaign will continue on November 5 at the Mon Village Football Ground, where additional sports activities and voter registration opportunities are anticipated to engage even more youth from the region.
Through this innovative approach, the Nagaland Election Department aims to harness the power of sports to inspire the younger generation to participate in the democratic process, ensuring that their voices are heard in upcoming elections.
