Protests Erupt at Assam Medical College Over Gate Closure; Clashes With Police Ensue
Dibrugarh— Tensions escalated at the Assam Medical College (AMC) as residents of the Alubari Line from the Jalan Tea Estate staged a vehement protest against the sudden closure of their primary access gate.
The decision by AMC authorities to block the gate without prior notice ignited outrage among local residents, who gathered early in the morning to demand its immediate reopening.
What began as a peaceful demonstration quickly turned confrontational. Heated exchanges between the protesters and police personnel escalated into a physical clash as officers attempted to disperse the crowd. The situation deteriorated further, leading to the detention of several protesters.
In a bid to enforce the gate’s closure, AMC authorities resorted to using a JCB excavator to dig up the entrance, completely obstructing the pathway and preventing access to the college. This drastic action only fueled the residents’ anger, as they voiced their frustrations over the lack of communication regarding the closure and its impact on their daily lives.
Local leaders and community members condemned the AMC’s decision, asserting that the gate closure would hinder access to essential medical services for residents. As the protest unfolded, demands for accountability and dialogue with college authorities intensified, highlighting the growing tension between the local community and AMC officials.
As law enforcement remains on the scene to monitor the situation, the community is calling for urgent discussions to resolve the conflict and restore access to the crucial entry point.
