Kohima: During the second leg of the Parliament Budget Session 2025, Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir raised concerns over the neglect of Nagaland’s Village Guards, urging the Union Home Minister to take immediate action.
Addressing the Lok Sabha on March 12, Jamir highlighted the dire conditions faced by the guards, who have been protecting 120 villages along the Indo-Myanmar border across six districts—Mon, Tuensang, Kiphire, Meluri, Noklak, and Longleng—since 1957.
The MP criticized the inadequate financial support provided to these guards, emphasizing their meagre monthly salary of just ₹3,000, an annual clothing allowance of ₹100, and a monthly ration allowance of ₹60. He described these figures as a stark example of government neglect, despite the guards’ crucial role in border security and maintaining law and order in remote areas.
Jamir urged the central government to prioritize strengthening the Village Guard system rather than solely focusing on border fencing and movement restrictions. He argued that better deployment of these guards would enhance security while preserving traditional mobility and livelihoods for border communities. His appeal has sparked discussions on the need for a comprehensive policy overhaul to recognize and support the longstanding contributions of Nagaland’s Village Guards.
